- Joan at Ghost Ranch Workshop

Workshops or Readings

I am available for workshops and readings in your community. Workshops can be tailored to fit the time frame and interests of your writers. Ten years of leading workshops in a variety of settings, from penitentiaries to living rooms, art galleries to museums, zen centers to churches, have trained me in a flexible and humorous approach.

My week long workshops at Ghost Ranch, ten years deep, continue to delight participants (we do evaluations). A workshop in your town may lead to a lifelong writing group as evidenced in Boise, Idaho where I am a yearly visitor to the Log Cabin Literary Center and Logghe Gals, my pals and sponsors. Yes, like Annette Funicello, I too have fans.

A reading, or reading followed by a writing workshop in your museum, B & B, school, living room, or gallery will jumpstart your muse.

Topics include:

Poetics for Earth Householders: We'll read and write forms from many cultures, including the ghazal, pantoum, tanka, anaphora, and Beat ragas.

The Story and the Song: An exploration in prose and poetry of the plot lines and songlines of a life, a fabulous riff with Your Material.

Writing Under Extremes: Extremities such as illness, death, love, or crisis may be places of breakthrough for your writing. We'll map out the territory and navigate the rapids with writing. Especially suited to groups of therapists, residential treatment centers, or anyone willing to free fall off the comfortable edges, we'll also discuss and experience how healing may be a fringe benefit when the focus is on the writing, not the self.

Writing the Range: Full tilt boogie, a sampler of writing style and genre, memoir to monologue, sudden fiction to sestina. Enliven your writing gang with a fresh blast of outsider energy. Be at home on the range of writing.

Give a call. I Have lap-top & will travel.

Jewish Poetry of New Mexico

Editors of Another Desert: Jewish Poetry of New Mexico, offer a series of workshops and readings for your community, synagogue, youth group, or Hillel organization.

1. A poetry reading, presenting their own work and those of others in the anthology, would include informal comments on the origin of the book and Jewish life in New Mexico.

2. Lecture of 45 minutes to an hour on the myth and history of the hidden Jews of New Mexico. The influence of recent interest and research on the crypto-Jews on New Mexican art and artists would be explored through readings from the anthology, discussion, and slides.

3. Writing workshop, Finding Your Jewish Voice: Exploring the Jewish Experience. Both writers have conducted writing workshops on Jewish themes and have taught extensively throughout the country. Workshops could range from two hours to an entire day.

Pricing and scheduling negotiable on all of the above.
